Asian Kite Festival and Children's Day Celebration

Family fun with kite making/flying competitions, performances, field games and more!

All ages are welcome to enjoy an afternoon of kite-flying competitions for prizes, making an Asian fighter kite, samurai hat and koinobori carp streamers, origami paper folding, participating in field games and an obstacle course, and more. Performances include the Yujin Gakuen singers and taiko drummers, Iron Mango Orchestra (ukulele), Wako Daiko taiko drummers, Chinese American Benevolent Association Chinese Lion Dancers, Eugene Taiko, and Halau Hula O Na Pau O Hawaii Nei dancers. Festival visitors who arrive without a kite, and wish to fly or enter the kite flying competitions, can make their own Asian fighter kite for $3, which covers the cost of materials. The kite competition will award prizes to participants in several categories, including Most Creative and Highest-Flying. All kite competitions winners will be announced at 4:00 p.m. and awarded prizes. Local kite enthusiast Ken Nagao will have a number of his handmade Asian kites on display including his latest creation of a 5’ x 11’ kite depicting the castle built by the Nagao Clan on Kasugayama (Spring Day Mountain) in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, Japan The Asian Kite Festival and the Yujin Gakuen Children’s Day Celebration is organized by the Eugene/Springfield Asian Council, Yujin Gakuen PTO, Japanese American Association of Lane County, and the University of Oregon Japanese Student Organization.
