Young writers! Join us for our June Write Club workshop Poetic Temperaments – Story, Music, Structure, Imagination with Anna Ball.

This workshop will introduce aspiring creative writers to four easy ways of writing poetry. No experience necessary! During our afternoon together, we’ll explore the four personality types of a poet and the simple techniques each uses to create a good poem. You’ll learn to identify your own poetic temperament… Are you a storyteller? A musician playing language like an instrument? Do you approach writing a poem like an architect would design a building? Or do you paint your poems full of images and thoughts? At the end of the workshop, you’ll go home with a handful of your own poems and several ideas for writing more—plus, a better sense of your own creative personality type!

About the Instructor

Anna is a poet and educator who believes the art of writing can lead us to the best versions of ourselves, affirming both our inner child and our innate wisdom. She’s thought of herself as a writer since the first grade, when she started writing poems about the immense and mysterious forest in her backyard. Originally from Maryland, she earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Oregon in 2019, where she taught a year-long series of workshops for young poets, which culminated in an annual anthology of their creative work. She has also taught writing to middle schoolers and high schoolers at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, most recently serving as an instructor for the 2022 issue of Lexophilia, the student-run literary journal. Today, poems and essays are her favorite avenues for expression, and she finds a lot of joy in teaching these forms of writing. She’s currently based in Eugene, Oregon. By day, she works as an academic and career advisor at the University of Oregon, and by night, she’s plotting out her first book of poems.
