The Gutenberg Dialogues
An In-depth Look at Tyranny
Gather around a warm fire with a nice cup of tea for conversation and community as we join together to look back at our shared intellectual tradition about rulers gone awry. Yes, you must provide your own fire and your own tea, but together we will discuss a topic on the minds of many: tyranny. Whether on the Left or Right, it seems as if the threat of tyranny has entered our collective consciousness. But what is tyranny, and what has been said about it?
During the winter and spring quarters, we will meet to discuss the nature and sources of tyranny by looking at various influential authors of our past. Each week, a Gutenberg staff person will lecture on a related topic (see below), followed by discussion and a question-and-answer session. Several of the classes may also discuss a very short reading selection assigned prior to class to enrich our understanding. So whether you have a lot to share or just want to listen, gather with us as we all attempt to better understand our times.
Since we are Zooming our community classes this year, we hope friends across the country can join us. To make that more convenient, we are moving our community-class start time a little earlier, to 6:30 p.m., and shortening the lecture time/discussion time to one hour, followed by an additional one-half hour for those who want to continue asking questions. We will also record the lectures (only) and make them available to registered participants who may not be able to attend at the designated time.
Attendee Requirements: All attendees will need to register for instructions about how to join us online. (You can register to attend the series or to attend individual classes.) We will email each session’s reading and virtual classroom link (Zoom) one week before each class. You are not required to participate (just watching is encouraged!), but you must register to attend. The discussions will not be recorded.
