Ku'uipo Kumukahi at Whirled Pies
Legendary Hawaiian singer/songwriter Kuʻuipo Kumukahi will perform one show, with preshow slack key guitar by Maggie Matoba and Matthew Riley, and hula by Akiko Colton.
Legendary Hawaiian singer/songwriter Kuʻuipo Kumukahi will perform one show at Whirled Pies on Sunday, April 7. Doors open at 5:30, preshow music at 6:00 with slack key guitarists Maggie Matoba and Matthew Riley, and the main performance starts at 6:30. Admission is $10 at the door, age 12 and under free.
There will also be hula dancing by Akiko Colton, head of Eugene's premier hula school, Hālau Hula O Nā Pua O Hawai'i Nei.
Ku'uipo has decades of experience as a performer, recording artist, songwriter and hula teacher. She has won numerous Nā Hōkū awards (Hawaiian Grammys), and her most recent album, Nā Lani 'Ehā ("The Four Royals") was commissioned by the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame.
In addition to her music career, she has a long history of public service, advocating for disadvantaged people and teaching Hawaiian values. She is currently Director of Hawaiian Culture at the Hyatt Regency in Waikiki, and she is also a cultural advisor on the board of the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.
Passionate about all things Hawaiian, Kuʻuipo takes a humorous and loving approach to sharing her knowledge of Hawaiian culture through music.
This concert is the first event sponsored by Eugene's new Hawaiian music network, Hui Ho'onu'a. The name means "to give generously and continuously."
