Annie Get Your Gun

With a heartwarming book by veteran librettists Dorothy and Herbert Fields and a flat-out brilliant score by Irving Berlin, Annie Get Your Gun was a smash hit when it opened in 1946 and has lifted the spirits of young and old ever since. The plot is classic musical comedy: a lighthearted, totally predictable, completely untrue, and thoroughly enjoyable telling of the love story of real-life sharpshooters Annie Oakley (1860-1926) and Frank Butler (1847-1926), set in the late 19th century world of Wild West-themed vaudeville which made Annie internationally famous. Plenty of laughs, more than a few wise insights into the age-old foibles of the human condition, and simply a ton of classic songs, including "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly", "You Can’t Get a Man With a Gun", "Moonshine Lullabye", "They Say It’s Wonderful", "My Defenses Are Down", "There's No Business Like Show Business", "I Got The Sun in The Morning", and "Anything You Can Do". What can we say? It's a perfect holiday outing for the entire family! In 2006 The Shedd Institute presented Peter Stone's 1999 "updated" revision of the show. Since that time, we've made a special effort to mount as many of our musicals as possible in their original version, and in that tradition this December we are pleased to present to you the 1946 original!
