Carl Woideck Jazz Heritage Project: "1959"

A Year that Changed Jazz

1959 was an important transitional year for jazz. Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Sidney Bechet all died. But modern musicians Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Ornette Coleman all recorded landmark albums that suggested new directions. Carl Woideck's group will honor both those traditionalists and explorers in a night of great jazz. Among the albums they will be paying homage to are: Time Out (Brubeck), Ah Um (Mingus), Kind of Blue (Davis), The Shape of Jazz to Come (Coleman), and Giant Steps (Coltrane).
