Kermet Apio, Hawaiian Comedy & Music

Kermet Apio does family-friendly comedy, plays slack key guitar, and sings traditional Hawaiian music. He will do one comedy set and a one music set, with hula by the Iron Mango dancers, and preshow by Jim Liberato.

Kermet Apio is both a stand-up comedian and a traditional Hawaiian musician. Hawai'i-born, he graduated from Iolani Schools in Honolulu, then the University of Washington, and he's lived in the Seattle area ever since.

In 1991, his first year doing professional stand-up, Kermet won the Seattle Comedy Competition. He has since won the Great American Comedy Festival; performed in 47 states and China, Israel, New Zealand and Canada; appeared on A&E, PBS and NPR; opened for Brian Regan, Weird Al Yankovich and the Smothers Brothers; and put out a comedy CD "Unarmed and Lethargic." Before launching his comedy career, he was 1988 Dishwasher of the Month at the Denny's in Sea-Tac International Airport.

Kermet avoids shrill and off-color humor, relying instead on a warm but sharp wit and family-friendly monologues. He is married and has two teenagers, loves baseball and pie, is Hawaiian, and is named "Kermet," all of which gives him plenty to laugh about.

As a musician, he performs around Seattle, including as part of the band for the hālau, Hula O Lehualani in Edmonds. An accomplished 'ukulele and guitar player with nahenahe vocals, he plays a wide variety of popular and traditional Hawaiian songs.

Kermet will be doing one set of comedy and one set of Hawaiian music. The music set will include hula by the Iron Mango dancers, plus there will be a preshow by Jim Liberato. This concert at Whirled Pies is supported by the Hui Ho'onu'a network of Eugene/Springfield.
