No No Boy at DisOrient Opening Celebration

Singer-songwriter-scholar Julian Saporiti brings his multi-media show to the opening celebration of the DisOrient Asian American Film Festival.

NO NO BOY will be performed live at the UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on Friday, March 15, at 9:30 pm, as part of the opening celebration for the DisOrient Asian American Film Festival.

Tickets are $15 and available at DisOrientFilm.org or at the door; there is a $3 discount for UO students available at the door. The performance will include a slide show and a question and answer session. As part of the DisOrient opening celebration, doors open at 8:30 pm and tickets include catered savory and sweet bites.

NO NO BOY is a multimedia concert about the Asian American experience, by singer-songwriter-scholar Julian Saporiti. It combines original songs, storytelling and projected archival images to explore little-known Asian American histories.

Nashville-born Saporiti has transformed years of doctoral research at Brown University into an innovative concert/dissertation, drawing inspiration from interviews with World War II Japanese American internment camp survivors, his own family's experience living through the Vietnam War, and other stories of Asian Americans.

NO NO BOY has played across the country, from universities and cultural centers to rural churches, bars and indie rock clubs. The name "No No Boy" derives from a World War II term for Japanese Americans who refused to swear allegiance to the U.S. government, or be drafted, while their families and friends were locked away in internment camps.

The DisOrient Film Festival is a Eugene tradition, now in its 14th year. Its films reveal and validate the breadth of Asian American experience by sharing stories and advocating for social justice. This year's festival features 37 films, including narratives, documentaries, shorts, and a music video, as well as discussions with the filmmakers and other events. The festival runs March 14-17 at various locations on the UO campus. Full schedule and ticket information is at DisOrientFilm.org.
