The Wizard of Oz

L. Frank Baum’s beloved 1900 children’s tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was hardly news to Depression-era America: a hugely successful 1903 stage production had achieved the longest Broadway run of the 1910s and toured the country for 8 years thereafter, and several silent Oz films were made between 1908 and 1933. But when M-G-M premiered its own version of the tale 79 years ago this month at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, the impact on the American psyche was staggering and permanent. The Shedd Institute presents the Royal Shakespeare Co’s 1987 stage adaptation of this legendary motion picture, which follows the original screenplay almost verbatim and retains all of the great Yip Harburg/Harold Arlen songs. Peg Major directs, with music direction by Robert Ashens, and choreography by Caitlin Christopher.
